Ladies Auxiliary

The Edwardstown Lions Ladies’ Auxiliary was formed in February, 1963, with 26 members.  Since then the auxiliary has met monthly for a dinner meeting.

In 1975 when the Lioness program began, the ladies decided that they would stay as they were, and not change over to a Lioness Club. Today, some 39 years later, the auxiliary with 25 members is stronger than ever, performing projects of their own through our club and also being involved in club projects.

Last year the auxiliary was given a grant by the Australian Lions Foundation to complete a project at the Resthaven Home, Marion. This was the first project ever funded by the Foundation through a ladies’ auxiliary.

Money raised by the auxiliary averages $3500 per year. One project in particular, a Melbourne Cup Luncheon and Fashion Parade, has been held each year since 1963.

Visitors are welcome to the meetings, which are held at the Marion Hotel, Marion Road, Mitchell Park, 6.45pm for 7.00pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month

          Melbourne Cup Luncheon 2006

“The ladies Auxiliary held their Annual Melbourne Cup Lunch at the Glenelg Golf Club with over 120 Ladies and gents attending. The Lunch was one of the best ever held I was told by two Ladies who are original members of the Ladies Auxiliary. 40 sweeps were sold which is the highest number for many years.

A Hat Parade was held the photos of the three winners are shown below.’

“The 2006 - 2007 President of the Ladies Auxiliary Sybil Tregaskis invited the members of the Lions Club to attend the August meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary as the Guest Speaker was Sgt. Paul Friend from the South Australian Police Force.

Sgt. Friend is very well known for his weekly sessions on Radio Station 5AA and the ABC answering questions about road rules and other traffic queries.

The meeting was a great success with 34 members of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Lions Club attending. Sgt. Friend asked all present to complete a questioner about road rules. He then discussed with all present about their answers, and then gave the correct answers. He then explained many of the changes that had been made to the various road rules and the reason for the changes.

All agreed it was a very enjoyable evening with wonderful fellowship, all then went home wondering how they ever achieved a drivers licence!”
