Beachcomber Night

Presidents’ Night 2006.

For many years the Club has celebrated the Presidents’ Night at the second meeting in January.

This year, instead of having it at the President’s home it was held at the Active Elders Association Hall with over 70 Lions and Guests attending. The theme this year was a “Beachcomber Night”

The night was an excellent one to suit the theme, with the temperature over the 40c mark, so zinc cream and sunscreen were used by all.

Members and Guests, 19 from the Aberfoyle & Districts Lions Club, one from Panorama and one from Mitcham Lions Club arrived dressed in all sorts of beachwear including David Reed in a wet suit with a surf board, Sonja Reed with a “duck floaty ring”. One couple Vicki & Geoff Burford attired in brightly coloured beachwear complete with their Esky bearing a sign, “Maslins or Bust” were judged the “Best Dressed” couple.

The “Best Dressed” man Richard Ashman (who was also the Bride in the Clubs’ Mock Wedding last year”) was dressed in a bright orange shirt, very long shorts and bare feet.

Sonja Reed was judged “Best Dressed” in the swimsuit and sarong with the “Duck floaty Ring”.

The vocal entertainment was provided by several members and some of the Guests, four New Zealanders performed a Haka, others sang songs from their country of origin, one couple Vili and Veselin Stefanov from Bulgaria sang their National Anthem. A New Zealand Lion invited a member to sing Waltzing Matilda with him; they were joined by all present which created lots of laughter.

Our sincere thanks are extended to Ellen, Les and Stewart Duncombe for providing us with a most enjoyable meal under very difficult circumstances because of the heat and no air conditioning during the afternoon.

We also offer our sincere thanks to the organisers, Chris Woodrup, Raelene Welsh and Richard Ashman.
