Mr Udoy Saika
who is a lecturer at the Flinders University, approached our Club to see if
we would support him in getting Toys and Craft accessories so he and his
wife could start a Toy Library Community Centre in Assam in India.
When he
approached one of our members he gave her a quote about Assam from the Chief
of Police in Assam:-
"The representative
child in Assam today is a shell shocked and frightened entity, bereft of
opportunity to bloom in an atmosphere of freedom, laughter and gaiety"
As a result of the
approach, the Board and Members decided to donate goods to the value of $200
to start the project which I can say is a 100% success with help coming from
all directions.
Mrs Saika has gone to India
to set the Centre up and will be returning to Australia in approximately two
months.
Assam is in the northeast
of India, just below the Himalayan foothills. Assam is the birthplace
of Indian tea and is famous for producing 51% of the tea produced in India.
It is the world's largest tea growing region, producing more than 1,500,000
pounds of tea annually. It has a rainfall of 120mm per year.
