On Wednesday,
21st November a Dinner with 65 Lions, Guests and District Officers
attending was held at the Marion Hotel to celebrate our Charter Anniversary and
to have a Citizenship Ceremony conducted by the Acting CEO of the City of
Marion.
The Chairman
for the evening was our remaining Charter member PDG Doug Omond, who told the
meeting he was honoured to be the Chairman for the night, as he had been the
Charter Night Chairman on Saturday, 19th November 1962.
Included in the
Guests attending was Ms Sara Philpott and Ms Karina Webb from the City of
Marion, Mrs Cathy Brideson a volunteer working with the Sudanese Community in
the Marion area, Mr Roy King representing the President of the City of Adelaide
Lions Club our sponsor Club, Roy is the remaining Charter Member of that Club.
Family members and friends of the two candidates involved in the Citizenship
Ceremony.
The two people
involved in the Ceremony were Mrs Mabeny (a Sudanese citizen) whose husband and
three children attended with her (who have all taken out Australian Citizenship)
and Mr Guy Roux (a French citizen) who was accompanied by his wife and a group
of their friends.
At the
conclusion of the Ceremony Ms Sara Philpott the Acting CEO of the City of Marion
invited all present to stand and also make the Pledge of Commitment to
Australia.
The Pledge of
Commitment:-
From this time

to Australia and its people,
Whose democratic
beliefs I share,
Whose rights and
liberties I respect,
And whose laws I
will uphold and obey.
Later in the
evening the Club Charter was represented to President Ian by PDG Don Burge, the
first occasion that a PDG from our Club conducted this Ceremony and a new member
Ms Wendy Johnstone was inducted by President Ian.
A special
presentation of a James D Richardson Honour Award was made to Di and Guy Roux,
for their outstanding effort in helping the Club members with the Lagoon
Project. This was a joint project for the City of Marion that was carried out
with the local Kiwanis Club members.
President Ian
congratulated Mrs Mabeny and Mr Roux on becoming Australian Citizens and
presented them with a gift of books on South Australia; the three children with
Mrs Mabeny were given toys depicting Australian animals. He also thanked Ms
Sara Philpott the Acting CEO of the City of Marion and Ms Karina Webb the
Executive Assistant to the Mayor for her help, and cooperation, in arranging the
night.
In conclusion
he congratulated all members in taking the Pledge of Commitment to Australia at
the end of the Citizenship Ceremony.
